Coralie Franklin Cook (1861-1942) was born into slavery and eventually became the first descendant of a Monticello slave known to have graduated from college.  She graduated from Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. in 1880.  She later taught elocution and English at the college and then taught at Howard University.  Cook was also known for her activities relating to the Civil Rights Movement.

7. Coralie Franklin Cook, Storer College Alum

Redman (1900-1964) was a prominent jazz musician, arranger, band leader, and composer.  Born in Piedmont, West Virginia, he graduated from Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W. Va. in 1920, and he also graduated from the Boston Conservatory.  Redman became a member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

J.R. Clifford graduated from Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. in 1874. He was the first African-American Attorney in West Virginia.  Clifford also published the newspaper, "The Pioneer Press" in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Sylvia Bishop graduated from Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W. Va., and was the first African-American woman licensed to train thoroughbred horses in the U.S.  Her home track was the Charles Town Race Track, W.Va.

Houston Brooks graduated from Storer College in 1950 and received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and Veterinary Physiology from Iowa State University.

Wheaton was the first African American to graduate from the University of Minnesota Law School.  He was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 1898.

Born in Piedmont, West Virginia, Redman studied at Storer and at the Boston Conservatory.  He was a jazz musician, arranger, bandleader, and composer.  Redman became a member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

Soon after the Civil War, John Storer contributed $10,000 towards establishing a college in Harpers Ferry, W. Va. This institution of higher learning was the first college below the Mason- Dixon Line to accept students "without distinction of race or color". The school bears the name of it's principle benefactor,  Storer College.

'This was one of the first church buildings built in the town of New Durham. It is about four miles northeast of the Ridge at what is called New Durham Corner. it was built about 1750. It has since been used as a church and town house. Randal preached here for some years. The pine tree has been a landmark for years. Notice the ledge in front of the building. Whether that has anything to do with the building I cannot say.'

'The grave of Randal and his wife was marked by a plain stone. The present monument was erected September 14, 1859.' One of the Founders of Storer College.

'This is the present church at New Durham. It was built about 1817. the foundation is as solid as that of the old church. The ledge showing in many places.' Free Will Baptists were one of the founders of Storer College.

'The Boody House was at one time the largest in the town. In the room at the right of the door the church was organized with seven members. The room still contains the table, the chair used by Randal. It is kept as near as possible in its original condition.' Once Used as a Church by Benjamin Randal, one of the Founders of the Free Will Baptists and Storer College.

This desk was used by Randal. We cannot say he wrote his sermons here as I have seen only two sermons written by him. This desk is now is the parsonage at New Durham. Some of the partitions of the pigeon holes are said to have been put in by Randal himself.
